Charles Bowers was born in Lakenheath (Mildenhall Q3-1878 4A:589), son of Charles and Ann BOWERS (née RUTTERFORD).

1881 census...Aged 3, he was at Warren Lodge, Elveden with his father Charles [30] warrener; his mother Ann [30], brothers Joseph R [13], Walter [8], John [4] and William [11 months] and sister Susan [6]. All were born in Lakenheath.

1891 census...Aged 12, he was at Warren Wood, Rectory Road, Elveden with his parents, brothers Walter (warrener), John [14] warrener/apprentice game keeper, William [11] (now recorded as born Wangford) and Arthur W [3 months] born Elveden; sisters Susan, Annie M [9], Eliza C [6] and Alice B [3]. The new sisters were all born in Elveden.

1901 census...Aged 22, a game keeper's assistant, he was at London Lodge, Highclere, lodging with Anthony and Martha BASSETT. His parents were still at Warren Wood, Elveden with his brother William (warrener/gamekeeper, sister Alice B and brothers Arthur W and Ebeneezer [8] born Elveden.

In 1908 he married Beatrice Ada JOSEY (Hungerford Q1-1908 2C:397).

1911 census...Aged 32, a gamekeeper, he was at Downton Burrington, Ludlow with his wife Beatrice Ada [28] born Inkpen, Berkshire and their daughter Ethel[18 month] born Farleigh, Hampshire. His parents were at Summerpit, Elveden with his brothers Wilfred (William) a warrener and Ebenezer, a footman.


He enlisted in Ludlow.
His register of soldiers effects gives him as dying of his wounds at Derby War Hospital, Warrington. Without his Army service records there is no way of telling where or when he was wounded.

Charles Bowers is buried in Inkpen (St. Michael) Churchyard, Berkshire, NW of Tower
and also commemorated on the Weather Heath Memorial (Elveden Column by the A11)
